BRITISH PIGEON SHOW SOCIETY / NATIONAL PIGEON ASSOCIATION NATIONAL SHOW
BARNSLEY 2018
May I wish everybody a belated Happy New Year. On behalf of the BPSS joint President Archie Taylor and the Committee I would like to thank all exhibitors, judges and visitors for making the show a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. It was very encouraging that the number of entries was up on 2017 with 1664 by 117 exhibitors. The venue of Barnsley Metrodome is a resounding success and there was a very good atmosphere throughout the weekend. With its splendid facilities I am sure that the show will now go from strength to strength and increase its support from the fancy as a whole. The show as a whole ran very well with no hick ups at all. I am also pleased to say that the Metrodome has been booked for the next four years. Breeds with large entries were Exhibition Fantails with 215, Indian Fantails 93, Long Faced Tumblers 110 and Modenas 82. I would like to thank all who helped in the show office filling in the NPA certs, particularly Beverly & John Elsdon, Gill Robson, Nicola Littlewood and my wife Dawn. The BPSS committee & All Keep Penning Ltd put a lot of hard work, both before and during into the show to put on such a super event, so it was very much appreciated that it was so well received by all the exhibitors I spoke to and who have been in touch since.
Many thanks also to all the judges for officiating, and with all the breed classes judged in good time the BPSS committee had plenty of time to sort out the main section judging on Saturday afternoon. The Metrodome had staging and audio system available so we took full advantage and used it for the Championship Row pens, Section judging and the Presentation ceremony. This certainly added a great deal to the visual aspect of the show, as I think did the lighting system on the side walls. The first was the Blower section where Charlie Rowe one of our American visitors placed Adrian Knaggs black Norwich Cropper as winner. The second section was for Structure breeds with David Richardson giving top spot to a blue German Double Crested Trumpeter from Phil Bewick. Two years running this breed for Phil has won this section. Tumbler breeds were the third section to be judged with Richard Henderson’s Andalusian Nun being chosen by Judge Kevin Pratt. Next was the Short Faced section with winner David Knaggs white African Owl chosen by Judge Robin Pratt. Mark Rudd judged section five for the Colour breeds and the leading bird was a Silesian Swallow exhibited by Kevin Reynolds. Section six was for Form/Head breeds with Mike Hughes our other visiting American judging. The section winner was Sheila Goodmans blue grizzle Show King. The final section was for the Flyer breeds and judge Brian Brock gave top spot to a mealy British Show Racer exhibited by Dixon & Dodgson. Well done to all those fanciers.
Sunday in the show hall always starts quiet but during the morning builds up with anticipation for the presentation ceremony. Once all the relevant paperwork is completed and all the trophies and awards sorted everything is ready for the judging to find which bird would be Supreme Show Champion 2018. The three judges invited to officiate this year were BPSS President Archie Taylor, Scott Sharp and Colin Jeckell. This year’s Supreme Show Champion placed high with all three judges, although it was a close result, congratulations therefore must go to Adrian Knaggs and his black Norwich Cropper. This is the second time in three years one of Adrians Norwich has won the top prize at the BPSS show. Congratulations also to Richard Henderson whose adult cock andalusian Nun was Reserve Show Champion for the second year running and to Mike Knaggs whose kite Long Faced Clean legged Tumbler won Best Young Bird. A full list of all the main trophy winners is listed elsewhere along with Best of Breed winners. Out of a very good entry of 40 in the Junior Fancier classes, Charlie Bewick’s double crested Trumpeter led the way, with Maxwell Wilson taking the Best Opposite Age Junior award. The main raffle prize of £75 was won by Exhibition Fantail breeder Malcolm Ford.
The National Peristeronic Society classes were won by a beautifully turned out pen of black Saxon Spots exhibited by Kevin Reynolds in the 6 bird class. Horseman Pouters from Evan Murray won the matched pairs class, with Carla Wilson’s American Show Racer winning the ladies class. It was very pleasing that there were 25 entries in the star and NPS classes. This section adds something extra to the whole show.
The sale section was very well supported at the show and especially busy on the Saturday with several people about that I’ve never seen before. Hopefully they purchased birds, join the NPA and plan visiting more shows and exhibiting at them. The BPSS would like to thank the NPA, Versele Laga, Carr’s UK Ltd, B.Leefe & Sons Ltd and All Keep Penning for their generous sponsorship of the prize cards and main sections, and to all those individuals and breed clubs who sponsored, supported and helped to produce what was a tremendous show.
The BPSS committee would like to thank Mr & Mrs J.Elsdon, Mr & Mrs G.Bates, Mr & Mrs K. Sparkes, Mr & Mrs E.Chadwick, S.Morley, N.Worley, Littlewood & Roscoe, M.Emmerson, D.K.Knaggs & R.S.Henderson for being Patrons for the 2018 show. Your generosity was greatly appreciated.
The next BPSS/NPA National show is being held on 30th November & 1st December once again at the Metrodome in Barnsley. In the mean time why not visit the BPSS official website, www.showpigeons.co.uk for more photos from the last show and more details on this year’s show. I would think that many exhibitors noticed the photographer at the show, indeed many had their photos taken. He is Ray Aimson a professional photographer, and most of the photos he took are on the showpigeons website. If anybody would like a copy they can contact Ray direct at raymondaimson@gmail.com.
Planning is already under way for the 2019 show, so would breed club secretaries please let me know before the end of April of any changes to classifications, if you plan on holding your club or regional show at Barnsley plus any chosen judges. After that date I will be inviting judges where necessary. Best wishes to all for 2019.
Richard Henderson BPSS Secretary.
